Women's Hoops Downs Houston Jaguars 99-72

WACO, Texas - Junior forward Sophia Young (St. Vincent, West Indies) hit 11-of-14 from the field to finish with 23 points and eight rebounds in only 17 minutes to lead eighth-ranked Baylor to a 99-72 victory over the Houston Jaguars in women's basketball exhibition play Friday night at the Ferrell Center.

Sophomore forward Abiola Wabara (Parma, Italy) registered a double-double for the Lady Bears with 15 points, nine in the second half, and a game-high 10 boards. Senior post Steffanie Blackmon (Dallas, Texas) added 10 points, while freshman Angela Tisdale (Austin, Texas) dished out a game-high seven assists.

Junior guard Chameka Scott (Friendswood, Texas) hit a pair of 3-pointers as Baylor jumped out to a 14-5 lead, which included a 7-0 run. The Lady Bears led 26-13 before the Jaguars responded with a 7-0 run capped by a Umeka Webb trey to cut the lead to 26-20. After a timeout, Baylor, which turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, settled down and outscored Houston, 25-7, the rest of the half. The Lady Bears built as much as a 26-point lead courtesy of a 12-0 run from the 3:50 mark until the Jaguars got a bucket with 26 seconds left.

Young did most of her damage in the first half, scoring 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and pulling down five boards in 14 minutes. The Lady Bears shot 58.3 percent (21-of-36) from the floor in the opening frame and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from beyond the arc.

The Lady Bears led by as many as 34 at 82-48 in the second half, before head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson turned the game over to the newcomers along with Wabara and senior post Melanie Hammerly (Orange, Texas). The Jaguars chiseled the lead down to 24 with a 13-3 run,but the Lady Bears matched them the rest of the way.

Former Memphis guard Melissa Abraham led the Jaguars with 17 points and six rebounds, while former North Carolina State guard Umeka Webb added 16 points.

Baylor shot 51.4 percent (38-of-74) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from long range and held Houston to 36.1 percent (26-of-72) and only 6-of-24 from behind the arc. The Lady Bears outrebounded the Jaguars, 58-36, but committed more turnovers, 26-24.

Baylor completes its exhibition season by hosting the Basketball Travelers Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. The Lady Bears open the regular season against LSU in the State Farm/Tip-Off Classic Sunday, Nov. 14, at 12:30 p.m. the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, and can be seen live on ESPN2.
