TERRE HAUTE, Ind.-The Baylor women's cross country team concluded its season as the Bears raced to a 29th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on Monday morning.
"I'm really pleased with the way the season went," head coach Todd Harbour said. "The team had to overcome a lot of adversity this season and to finish among the top-30 teams in the country is a tremendous accomplishment."
As has been the case all season, sophomore Brittany Brockman led the way for the Bears as she raced to a 45th-place finish (67th overall) among team competitors. Brockman clocked a time of 21:37.3 in muddy conditions over the 6,000-meter course.
Monique Ortega was the next Baylor runner to finish as she turned in a time of 22:18.1 to finish 108th (140th overall).
A trio of freshman would close out the scoring for Baylor as Lyndsy Bedell, Lauren Hagans and Alissa McKaig all scored for the Bears.
Bedell was the third Baylor runner to finish as she crossed the line in a time of 22:57 to finish 160th among team competitors and 196th overall.
Bedell was followed by Hagans and McKaig as Hagans finished 173rd with a time 23:03.6 and McKaig finished 189th with a time of 23:20.5.
Jessa Chance and Brittany McGuire also ran for the Bears, however, did not score, as Chance closed out her career with a time of 23:37.4 while McGuire posted a time of 23:56.8.
Colorado took home the women's team title as Kim Smith of Providence took home the individual title with a time of 20:08.5.
The future looks bright for the Baylor women's cross country team as Chance will be the lone member of the squad who will not return next season. The Bears will return to action for the start of the indoor track and field season when Baylor travels to the Houston Indoor on January 15, 2005, in Houston, Texas.
