Where do I start? This past few days have been pretty eventful for the Lady Bears. After sending in my last journal, we were graciously invited to have dinner with the Willis'. The menu was amazing and hit the spot. I don't know about the others but I was craving a home cooked meal! The get together was a great opportunity to sit, eat and relax. It was a welcome change of scenery as well, and to top the night off we had a very unexpected visitor. Our Baylor mascot, Lady, came to visit us! She was so very cute; we even got to ask her trainer questions. Who would have thought our school mascot was so portable? It was an unexpected treat; I would like to thank the Willis' again for that experience.
Our next outing was probably one of the most memorable for Baylor as a university and definitely for us that weekend. Jordan, Victoria, Sophia, Latoya and I made our way out to the football game after morning practice on Saturday. It was overwhelming to see the amount of people there, especially since we thought we were early but still walked a good distance to get to the stadium. Once we walked in, it was obvious that many of the fans were rooting for Texas A&M. We still went to our usual section in the end zone and stood our ground for the Bears. Unfortunately, we were surrounded on all sides by maroon wearing Aggies! I think at that point we all came together and felt a huge sense of Baylor pride! As we traded touchdowns back and forth, we stood our ground (literally, I haven't stood that much at a football game before in my life) and we made ourselves heard! I mean we found anything that made noise and went nuts!!! The game was amazingly entertaining and suspenseful. Down to the overtime two-point conversion, my heart was racing. As soon as I saw the ref throw his hands up, I screamed and we took off like mad cows! I mean Sophia and I were in a hundred yard dead sprint. I actually ran into a couple football guys on the way to the goal post. Somehow Jordan made it through to the opposite end zone faster than everyone, but we caught up eventually! I found her on the far end of the field; we got up on a rail above everyone and started yelling. From what I heard we ended up on the jumbotron as a result of our actions, which is great! Anyway to make a long story short, it was the best game I have ever witnessed at Baylor! After the game we went to On the Border for dinner, although it was eleven at night! Coach Mulkey and Coach Derrick there as well, and so we talked about the game for a while before they got their table. It was a fun, but tiring day.
Sunday was our day off and I definitely utilized the time off! Usually we (the Lady Bears) spend our day off getting caught up, or in some cases I suppose getting ahead in classes. Sometimes it seems so weird to have free time that you really don't know what to do with it. I tend to take naps when I find myself in that situation. But that's just me!
Monday was practice as usual and Tuesday was as well. Tuesday night however, as some of you might remember, was our fan clinic. It was very informative for all. I think the most beneficial part of the whole ordeal was having Scotty Hermann break down the thought process of a referee, and the things they really look for. I really did learn some useful tidbits of information. Maybe that's something we should look into doing every year, in case of rule changes, etc..
Thursday was our new tip-off to the season, the Bear Growl. There was food set up outside and booths to buy Baylor clothes. I saw a couple shirts I wouldn't mind owning. Of course we showed up in time for the free food and then we all kind of hung out in the locker room. Which, as a side note, looks amazing now after Wendy and Jennifer made some major renovations. They did a great job and I just thought I would throw them a little shout out for their hard work! Anyway, we stayed in the locker room and played around until we were summoned to the court. Chelsea and I made up nicknames for our teammates prior to the event, and they were hilarious! I love that we can make fun of each other and ourselves and know its all in good fun! Emily definitely did her part of putting us on the map with her 3-point contest win against Aaron Bruce from the guy's team. What a champ, I love to watch her shoot, it's inspiring!
Friday, was a long awaited chance for the masses to see how hard we have been working. We put together a lot of good combinations on the floor Friday night against the Houston Jaguars and everyone got a chance to play. The turnout was great for an exhibition game and it was good to see all the supporters. The fan clinic must have done its job because the crowd sounded great. I think we worked out a lot of nerves on the court which is helpful. I think everyone can see now what we meant when said we have an athletic group of girls this year. Our freshmen are lightning fast and they only know that speed. I think its exciting to run the floor, and now we have a number of combinations who are capable of doing just that!
So with that we wrap up another week of Lady Bears off the court. November 14th is getting closer and it's coming quickly. Make sure you get your tickets soon cause it will be something you want to see in person.
