WACO, Texas - Baylor University has signed four men's basketball players to national letters of intent, head basketball coach Scott Drew announced Wednesday. The quartet includes three prep seniors, Henry Dugat of Dayton (Texas) High School, Curtis Jerrells of Del Valle High School in Austin, Texas and Kevin Rogers of South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas; as well as Tony Jones, a freshman at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas.
"Our coaching staff could not be any more pleased with the four student-athletes who signed with us today," Drew said. "This is the first recruiting class where our staff has had the opportunity to recruit the top high school players in the nation and especially the elite Texas high school recruits. This recruit ting class provides the athleticism and skill level required to compete in the Big 12 and will help represent Baylor in a positive light on and off the court. The future of Baylor basketball looks bright."
Baylor's four signees from the early signing period are currently projected as the nation's 19th-best recruiting class by HoopScoop and represent one of the highest rated recruiting classes in recent school history. The class includes three national Top-100 players and three Top-10 state recruits.
Rogers, a 6-8, 220-pound power forward, is a national Top-40 recruit that led South Oak Cliff to a 22-8 record and into the third round of the state 4A playoffs in 2003-2004. Rogers averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds last season as a junior and is rated the 35th-best recruit nationally by Rivals and Hoop Alliance. Athlon Sports ranks Rogers the No. 6 power forward recruit in the nation. Rogers is rated the sixth-best recruit in the state by Rivals, and is listed No. 7 by TexasHoops and No. 8 by HoopScoop.
Dugat is a 6-0, 160-pound combo guard and consensus Top-100 national recruit (No. 69 by Scout.com and No. 83 by Rivals and Hoop Alliance). He averaged 28.9 points, 5.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds as a junior in 2003-2004 and led Dayton to a 16-13 record, its first winning season in 12 years. TexasHoops rates Dugat the fifth-best senior recruit in Texas and Texas Roundball ranks the guard No. 6 in the state.
Jerrells, a 6-1, 170-pound point guard, averaged 18 points and 6 assists as a junior in 2003-2004 and was named to the TABC 4A All-State second team. He is rated the No. 94 recruit nationally by Rivals and the No. 7 recruit in Texas by Texas Roundball. Jerrells has started three seasons at Del Valle and is a two-time All-Region 4 first team selection and three-time all-district honoree.
Jones is a 6-7, 185-pound forward who redshirted the 2003-2004 season at Hill College and will have three seasons of eligibility at Baylor. He prepped at San Antonio's Taft High School, where he averaged 16 points and five rebounds as a senior in 2002-2003. Jones helped the Raiders to the 5A regional finals and a No. 12 final state ranking as a senior and was named all-city and all-region.
