WACO, Texas-In extremely soggy conditions at Betty Lou Mays Field, the Baylor soccer team stepped out of conference to defeat Northern Colorado 4-1 in action tonight. With the win, the Bears improved to 6-8-2 on the season as UNC falls to 3-11-0 on the year.
Missy McConnell opened the scoring for Baylor, hauling in a long pass from senior Lori Viggiano and chipping it over Northern Colorado goalie Chrissy Marvin in the 25th minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
McConnell's goal was the second of the season for the sophomore as Viggiano recorded her first assist of the year on the score.
The score remained the same the rest of the period as neither team had a solid scoring chance to close out the half.
As the rain began to pour to open the second half, Baylor extended the lead in wet playing conditions. On a long pass from April Robertson, Jessica Hutton beat Marvin on a low shot from 15 yards out as the Bears extended the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute.
With 24:47 left in the second half, the game was suspended for 30 minutes due to lightning in the area.
Once play resumed, Baylor quickly extended the lead to three when Hutton scored her second goal of the game, this time off a pass from McConnell, as Baylor grabbed a 3-0 lead.
Shea Yates made the score 4-0 in the 75th minute when she took a rebound off a shot from Gentry Sharp and put it in the back of the net for her first goal of her Baylor career. Jennifer Martin also added an assist on the play.
Katie Seno scored a goal in the 88th minute to put Northern Colorado on the board; however, UNC was unable to score again as Baylor rolled to a 4-1 victory.
Ashley Holder recorded the win for Baylor while saving three UNC shots.
On the night, Baylor out-shot UNC 18-4 and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Prior to the contest, Baylor honored seniors Katie Chicoine, April Robertson, Ginny Rosario-Tull, Kristin Ruef and Lori Viggiano.
The Bears will return to action at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24, as Baylor faces Missouri in the final home game of the season. With Oklahoma's loss to Colorado earlier in the day, a win by the Bears over Missouri, and then Texas Tech, would clinch a spot for Baylor in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
