WACO, Texas - Baylor's Sophia Young was selected Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games from Jan. 12-18, the conference office announced Monday.

Young, a 6-1 sophomore post, was impressive in Baylor's two games last week, a victory over #3 Texas and a one-point loss at #2 Texas Tech. She averaged 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while playing only 20.5 minutes a game. In Baylor's win over Texas, Young collected 14 points, five rebounds, and two steals in just 15 minutes of play. She was 6-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-5 from the free throw line. Against Texas Tech she led all scorers with 24 points and added nine rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals in 26 minutes of play. Nineteen of her points and six of her rebounds came in the second half. The St. Vincent, West Indies, native needs just five rebounds to reach 500 career rebounds with only 52 games under her belt. On the season, Young leads the Lady Bears in both scoring and rebounding with 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds a game which ranks her fourth and third in the Big 12, respectively. She is the league's leader in field goal percentage at .645 and ranks No. 3 nationally in that category and is No. 3 in steals among Big 12 players.

Young is the second Baylor player to be honored by the Big 12 this season, freshman Emily Niemann was named Rookie of the Week on December 15.
