SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Baylor track and field team began competition at the NCAA Championships today at Sacramento State's A.G. Spanos Sports Complex. Several Bears competed in the preliminary rounds on the first of four days of track and field action. Sophomore April Holliness was the first Baylor athlete to advance to the finals.

An indoor long jump All-American as a freshman, Holliness tied for third in the long jump prelims with a distance of 6.34 meters (20-9 ?). The finals of the event will be held on Friday.

Sophomore Lakadron Ivery opened competition for the Bears running in the prelims of the 100-meter dash, one of four events in which she qualified. The school recordholder in the event, she finished in 11.83 to advance to the semifinals. Later in the day in the semifinals of the event, she clocked an 11.94 to finish 18th.

Ivery also anchored the 4x100 relay team. She joined Marquisha Sefas, Holliness and Elizabeth Wilson to run the second-fastest time of the season, clocking a 44.39, but it was not fast enough to advance to the finals. The Bears finished 13th overall.

Freshman Angela Marvin made her first NCAA Championships appearance. With a time of 10:38.01, she finished 23rd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

On the men's side, Kyle King ran a season best time of 14.11.82 to finish 17th in the prelims of the 5,000.

California-native Jordan Lewis was the first competitor for the men. The Big 12 champion in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, he finished 18th with a time of 51.29.

Several athletes will compete for the first time on Thursday including Ivery in the 200, Darold Williamson in the 400 and the 4x400 relays. Debbie Thornhill will race in the first final of the four-day Championships as the 10,000-meter run concludes competition on Thursday.
