WACO, Texas - Benedikt Dorsch continued to add to his impressive list of firsts for the Baylor tennis program when he advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships with his victory over Coumbia's Oscar Chow today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. On Friday, Dorsch became the first Baylor player to advance past the round of 16.
After Dorsch took the first set relatively easily (6-1), Chow rebounded to take the second set 6-4. Ultimately, Dorsch prevailed in the third and final set, 7-5. The victory raised Dorsch's season singles record to 48-5. The talented sophomore will now face Miami's Todd Widom in the semifinals. Widom advanced after downing the tournament's No. 4 seed, Bo Hodge of Georgia, 6-3, 7-5. Matching up in the other semifinal is 3rd-seeded Amer Delic of Illinois and Washington's Alex Vlaski.
Dorsch and his doubles partner Reiner Neurohr came within a whisker of pulling off another upset in the doubles portion of the tournament. They had already posted wins over the Nos. 7 and 14 ranked teams to advance to the quarterfinals, the farthest any Baylor tandem had ever advanced. Taking on the tournament's 2nd-seeded team of Oliver Maiberg and Ryan Redondo of San Diego State, Dorsch and Neurohr took the first set 7-5. Both of the final two sets went down to the wire with the Aztec duo prevailing 7-5, 6-4, halting Dorsch and Neurohr's winning streak at 14. The Baylor tandem completes the season with a 26-3 record, the most wins by a doubles team in the history of the program.
