DALLAS - Possibly the most talented units since the origination of Big 12 Conference tennis in 1996-97, the 2003 All-Big 12 Conference coaches tennis teams contain up-and-coming youngsters and seniors with solid career credentials.
Current ITA Omni Hotels No. 2 nationally men's singles player-Baylor sophomore Benedikt Dorsch of Weiden, Germany-leads the 12-person men's team voted on by Big 12 men's head tennis coaches. He was No. 1 in Division I for five consecutive weeks before falling one spot earlier this week and leads a contingent of four standouts from coach Matt Knoll's squad.
Joining the BU newcomer on the men's squad are fellow soph Benjamin Becker, junior Matias Marin and senior Zoltan Papp. Becker and Papp each earned All-Big 12 honors last season as well, it was Marin's first time to be named to the elite squad. Those four stars joined junior Reiner Neurohr (Big 12 regular-season position winner at No. 5 singles) and freshman phenom Ivor Lovrak to help the Bears roll to a 22-1 record prior to the Big 12 tournament this week in Kansas City and a perfect 7-0 mark in conference dual matches.
Baylor also landed Becker-Papp and Dosrch-Neurohr among the six All-Big 12 men's doubles teams while Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M placed four of their doubles entries on the 2003 "dream team" to complete the first-team-only selections. Big 12 Players of the Year, Coaches of the Year, Freshmen of the Year, and Newcomers of the Year will be announced on Tuesday after the Apr. 24-27 postseason tourney concludes in Kansas City.
The women's side produced 12 All-Big 12 singles from 10 different schools, including co-champions Baylor and Texas A&M (both 9-2 in league dual play).
Baylor senior Vida Mulec earned her second straight All-Big 12 singles honor as well.
