Baylor Quotes
Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson
Opening Comments:
"Kansas State is very difficult for us to match up with. It would take a perfect game for us to even stay in the ball game with them. They present a lot of problems around our defensive end of the floor. I appreciate Baylor's effort at the end of the game to keep the lead less than 20 points and fight for the ball, and doing so with so many bench players. The team never gave up, and we hustled to the end. We just couldn't score and couldn't match up on the defensive end of the floor.
On the second half:
"They [Kansas State] have a tremendous defense. Our kids weren't sure if they were in man to man or in the zone. When you have a presence like [Nicole] Ohlde [Kansas State] that can alter shots for you and bang in there, the opponent becomes more hesitant. It is because of her presence and because of missing shots that we weren't playing north to south but sideline to sideline."
Jessika Stratton, Junior Guard On missing open shots:
"It is so frustrating because we had open looks and didn't knock them down in the first half. We dug ourselves a hole and just couldn't respond."
On Laurie Koehn:
"She adds an amazing outside presence. She makes some pretty deep shots with a hand in her face. She is a big outside threat and you have to give her credit."
Sophia Young, Freshman Forward
On missed shots:
"Our shots did not fall. We had wide open looks but they were just not falling. Like Jessica said, we got ourselves in a hole that we could not get out of."
On a chance in making it to the NCAA tournament:
"We have to sit back and wait. I think we deserve a chance. We worked hard and if we get that chance I think we will shock some people."
Kansas State Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening remarks...
"We just played an outstanding Baylor basketball team. They have tremendous talent on the boards. I was very proud of our effort overall. Defensively, I thought that was the critical element tonight against a team that rebounds well. I think we made them work hard for their second opportunity shots. Although they had a lot of rebounds I thought that we did a nice job defensively. It is amazing that you can finish a game with 55 boards and shoot under 30 percent from the floor. It is a credit to our overall defensive mindset, even through put back opportunities. We worked as hard as we could to continue to defend. "
On their defensive performance...
"We struggled at Tech on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. We felt like we needed to improve on both ends significantly. We obviously have great respect for (Sophia) Young and (Steffanie) Blackmon, and when Dionne (Brown) comes in you do not lose a lot. Our concept was to work as hard as we can to defend the first shot extremely well and try to take away some of the touches early in the game for their post players. We went in at half time with them beating us on the boards. That was a concern of ours. They tore us up in the second half as well. At the same time it is amazing that a team found a way to make enough stops to remain competitive. Offensively, it was important for us to get back to an inside-outside attack."
On handling the press...
"We didn't handle the press well, but that is my responsibility. We really selected how we wanted to prepare this team for this game. It has been a long time since we have addressed that issue. We played a lot of combinations and I think that was just an issue of preparedness. I think that is a coaching responsibility and it is one of the issues we knew going in that we would not address, but we compromised on to hone in on some other issues."
Laurie Koehn, Guard, Soph.
On her performance...
"We were just really trying to focus this week on getting to our spots on the floor and executing the offense better than we have been. We just came out tonight and did a lot better. It got us a lot of open shots and people made really good passes. Nicole (Ohlde), Kendra (Welcher), and Megan (Mahoney) always draw the defense and take pressure off the outside because they are really good inside. It was just great passes and we executed the offense well. "
On having to sit out with an injury...
"It is never fun to have to sit out and watch them play. You just want to have every opportunity to play. To miss that much time on the floor is not that much fun. It is an exciting time of year and I am just glad to be back on the court. I am thankful for that."
Nicole Ohlde, Forward/Center, Jr.
On the possibility of playing Texas Tech again...
"We are just happy to have the opportunity to play tomorrow. If we are able to face Tech tomorrow it is going to be another opportunity to play them. We are really looking forward to that. They are very tough and they proved that when we were down in Lubbock. It is going to be an exciting game. We just have to come out and do the things that we are capable of."
On how they adjusted to the physical nature of the game...
"It started out very physical and it was that way throughout the game. That is just the way the Big 12 Conference is. The players that came in for them were very physical. Their post players bring a lot to the floor. For us it is just a matter of getting to our spots and just letting the game come to us and being patient."
Kendra Wecker, Forward, Soph.
On giving up offensive rebounds... "They were getting a lot of offensive rebounds. I think ten of their first 18 points we from put backs. We just need to adjust to that. We did a good job defensively on making their first shots tough. That was our plan and we got beat on the rebounds, but I think that we did a fair job of boxing out and keeping them off the boards as the game went along."
