LINCOLN, Neb. - The Baylor Lady Bears' inside game and stingy defense proved too much for the host Nebraska Cornhuskers as Baylor cruised to a 69-44 victory over the Huskers in the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Wednesday evening.
Baylor's posts Sophia Young, Dionne Brown, Melanie Hamerly and Steffanie Blackmon combined for 48 of the Lady Bears' 69 points. Young, a freshman, led Baylor in scoring with 17 points, while Brown came off the bench to register Baylor's only other double digit scoring effort with 13. Blackmon and Hamerly each added nine points. Young and Blackmon were called for two fouls each early in the first half and sat the bench the rest of the period but Brown and Hamerly took up the slack. In the first half alone, Brown tallied 11 points and all five of her rebounds while Hamerly hauled down five boards in the first stanza. Hamerly would end up as the team's leading rebounder with seven. Young scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half and hit 8-of-11 from the floor for the game.
Baylor shot over 40 percent for the eighth time this season, going 29-of-60 from the floor for a .483 mark. The Huskers went to the charity stripe 29 times but only make 15 of those shots for 51.7 percent, while the Lady Bears made the most of their opportunities, draining 10 of their 12 attempts for 83.3 percent. Baylor forced 22 Husker turnovers and tallied 14 steals but the Lady Bears were out-rebounded for just the fifth time this season, 40-36.
The victory gave the Lady Bears their first Big 12 road win of the season and raised Baylor's record to 15-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12, while the Huskers fall to 8-11 and 1-7.
Baylor returns to action in the Ferrell Center on Sat., Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. when they host the 5th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Network.
