COMING UP...
Baylor plays its second straight Big 12 road game when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks in historic Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Baylor, 16-8 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12, stumbled in Stillwater, Okla., on Wednesday, losing to Oklahoma State 64-55. The loss came on the heels of a victory over No. 7 Texas Tech (86-72 ot) in Waco last Saturday.
The Kansas Jayhawks, currently 10-13 overall and 3-9 in league play, enter the game having snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday. They posted their second Big 12 road victory of the season with a 62-58 victory over Nebraska on Wednesday. Their other two league victories have come over Texas A&M (64-57) and Nebraska (67-64).
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE...
Freshman Sophia Young, a 6-1 forward, in just her fourth season of basketball, leads the Big 12 in rebounding at 9.6 a game. A freshman has never finished the season as the top rebounder in the Big 12 or former Big Eight and Southwest Conference. Among all Big 12 freshmen, Young ranks No. 1 in rebounding, scoring, steals and is No. 2 in blocked shots. She is No. 3 amongst all Big 12 players in field goal percentage (.557). Her 17 rebounds against Iowa State and Texas Tech are the most rebounds by a Big 12 player in league games this season. She has registered 12 games of double-digit rebounds and istied for first in the league in double-doubles with 11.
Young has twice been named Big 12 Rookie of the Week. Her most recent time came this week after she led Baylor to a victory over No. 7 Texas Tech with 26-point, 17-rebound performance.
Young's statistics in just Big 12 games are equally as impressive as her overall stats. In league games she averages 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds a contest and is shooting 56.2 percent from the floor. In all games she averages 12.9 points and 9.6 rebounds and is shooting 55.7 percent.
THE OPPONENT...
Kansas The Kansas Jayhawks, currently 10-13 overall and 3-9 in league play, enter the game having broke a four-game losing streak. On Wednesday, they picked up their second road league win of the season with a 62-58 victory at Nebraska. Blair Waltz was the Jayhawks leading scorer in the game with 14 points.
The Jayhawks have three players that average double digit scoring. Aquanita Burras, a 5-9 sophomore guard, scores 10.9 points a game to lead Kansas. Freshman Crystal Kemp, a 6-2 center, follows closely with 10.9 a contest and another freshman, Tamara Ransburg, scores 10.3 a game and leads the team in rebounding at 7.7 a game.
THE COACHES...
In just her third season as Baylor's head coach, Kim Mulkey-Robertson has led the Lady Bears to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, a final national ranking of No. 7 last season and a second place finish in the highly-competitive Big 12 Conference. The 2000 inductee to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame has a career record of 64-23 in her three seasons at Baylor.
Kansas' Marian Washington (West Chester State, 1970) is in her 30th season as the Jayhawks' head coach. She owns a career record of 550-342.
SERIES RECORDS...
Baylor vs. Kansas - Kansas leads the series with Baylor 6-4. All but three of the 10 contests have come since the inception of the Big 12. The Lady Bears have won the last two games, one in Lawrence and one in Waco. Kansas leads the series in games played in Lawrence 3-1.
