WACO, Texas - Baylor Lady Bear freshman Sophia Young, the league's leading rebounder, has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season in a vote of a media panel, the conference office announced Monday.
Young, a 6-1 freshman post, notched her 10th double-double of the year with her career high 26-point, 17-rebound performance in Baylor's 86-72 overtime victory over No. 7 Texas Tech. The 17 rebounds are the most in a league game this season and she's now accomplished it twice (Iowa State). She also registered four assists and four steals and was 12-of-21 (.571) from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. Seven of Young's rebounds were on the offensive end.
Against Oklahoma, Young narrowly missed another double-double with a 10 point, nine-rebound performance. She was 5-of-10 from the floor and added an assist and two steals.
For the week, the St. Vincent, West Indies native shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31), averaged 13.0 rebounds and 18.0 points and tallied five assists and six steals. In addition, she was 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
Young, a 6-1 freshman post, averages 12.5 points and 9.4 rebounds a game. Among Big 12 players she ranks No. 1 in rebounding and double-doubles and is No. 3 in field goal percentage (.559), 5th in steals (2.30) and 12th in blocked shots (1.47). In addition, she leads the league in offensive rebounds (3.91) and is second in defensive rebounds (6.36).
Young was also named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 30.
Texas' Stacy Stephens was named Big 12 Player of the Week. The 6-1 junior forward averaged 18.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in the Longhorns' road victories over Oklahoma State and Iowa State.
