AMES, Iowa (AP) - Jake Sullivan scored 26 points, 16 in the second half, to lead Iowa State to a 74-70 win against Baylor Saturday night in front of 11,509 fans.
Sullivan, who was 1-for-10 from the field and scored just six points in Wednesday night's loss at Oklahoma State, broke out of his slump by going 9-for-11 from the field and hitting all five of his free throw attempts. Sullivan made all four of his field goal attempts in the second half, including three from 3-point range. He was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Sullivan scored nine consecutive points in the second half after Baylor cut what was once an 11-point Iowa State lead to three on three occasions in the second half. His 3-pointer put the Cyclones ahead 47-41 with 12 minutes 34 seconds remaining.
Sullivan then scored on a traditional 3-point play to give the Cyclones a 50-44 lead with 12:06 remaining after Baylor made it a 47-44 game on Carlton Dotson's 3-point basket. Sullivan then hit another 3-pointer to make it 53-47.
Baylor, which lost its 21st consecutive road game, took a 57-55 lead on a layup by John Lucas with 8:17 remaining and went up 62-59 on a 3-pointer by Dotson with 6:22 remaining. But the Bears didn't make another field goal until there were 24 seconds left and Iowa State was ahead 71-65. Taylor's 3-pointer cut the lead to 71-68, but Iowa State put the game out of reach on a free throw by Marcus Jefferson with 19.2 seconds left and two free throws by Sullivan with 4.9 seconds to play.
Iowa State led through the first half, including a 35-29 advantage at halftime. Iowa State's biggest lead of the game was 27-16 with 5:23 to play in the half.
Iowa State led by 10 points, 40-30, on Sullivan's first 3-pointer of the second half before Baylor started its comeback. The Bears trailed 55-47 before tying the game at 55-5 on 3-pointers by Ellis Kidd and Turner and a regular basket by Turner.
Tim Barnes added 31 points to the Iowa State attack and Jackson Vroman scored 12 points. Iowa State (12-6, 2-5 Big 12) shot 54 percent for the game.
The Bears (9-8, 0-6) had four players in double figures, led by Taylor's 20 points. Lawrence Roberts scored 13, Ellis Kidd had 12 and Lucas finished with 10 points. Baylor was 22-of-47 from the field after hitting just 8-of-19 attempts in the first half.
