SAN JUAN - The Baylor Lady Bears claimed the championships of the 14th Annual San Juan Shootout by defeating the North Carolina State Wolfpack 79-63 on Monday evening in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Both teams came into the game with 2-0 tournament records after posting wins over UPR-Mayaguez and Eastern Michigan.
The victory raised Baylor's season record to 10-1 while the Wolfpack women drop to 7-4. Baylor's lone loss so far this season came at then-No. 7 Penn State.
Baylor has now played in seven regular season tournaments during head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson's tenure. They are 14-1 in regular season tournament games during that span and have won six of the seven tournaments.
Sophomore Sophia Young was named the tournament's most valuable player and teammate Jessika Stratton, a senior, was named to the all-tournament team as well. Young scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half to propel Baylor to victory.
The Lady Bears continue to exhibit their impressive shooting by hitting 28-of-55 shots on the night for a .509 shooting percentage. It is the eighth time in 11 games that Baylor has shot .500 or better. The Lady Bears, after shooting a dismal 57.1 percent from the free throw line against Eastern Michigan on Sunday, made 83.3 percent of their free throws against North Carolina State. Baylor was 20-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Baylor displayed an intense defense, especially in the paint, that limited NC State's top player Kaayla Chones to 4-of-12 shooting. Chones ended up with 15 points, seven of which came from the free throw line. As a team the Wolfpack women shot .311 (23-74) from the floor. The Lady Bears blocked five NC State shots on the night.
Young led the Lady Bears in scoring with 24 points and added six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She was 12-of-19 from the floor, shooting an impressive 63.2 percent. Stratton added 12 points, senior Dionne Brown had her first double-double of the season with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance and sophomore guard Ebony Jackson tallied 11 and. Jackson added seven assists and three steals on the night and Stratton tallied six assists.
The Lady Bears will take a break for the Christmas holidays and return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30 when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the 9-2 Florida Gators.
