SAN JUAN - The Baylor Lady Bears raised their record to 8-1 on the season with a convincing 103-25 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Janes in the two team's first games of the San Juan Shootout on Sat., Dec. 20. North Carolina State defeated Eastern Michigan, 64-55, in the first game of the day.
The 78-point win was the Lady Bear program's second largest margin of victory. Baylor outscored UT-Pan American by 93 points (129-36) in the 1976-77 season. In addition, it was the 49th time a Baylor women's team has scored 100 or more points.
Every player on the Baylor team scored and played at least nine minutes. Five players registered double figures for the Lady Bears, sophomore forward Sophia Young led with 17 points. Dionne Brown tallied 14 points, Chameka Scott 12, while Melanie Hamerly and Steffanie Blackmon each popped in 11. Scott, a sophomore forward, led the Lady Bears with 10 rebounds, registering her first career double-double. Steffanie Blackmon added eight and Young and Chelsea Whitaker each hauled down seven. Whitaker also had a career-high seven steals.
Baylor's staifling defense forced 30 UPR-Mayaguez turnovers, the Lady Bears registered 25 steals on the day. Baylor also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Janes 57-11.
Action in the Shootout will continue on Sunday, Dec. 21 when North Carolina State takes on UPR-Mayaguez followed by the Baylor-Eastern Michigan matchup. The Baylor-Eastern Michigan game will begin at 3 p.m. (CST).
