WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with an 88-51 win Monday night against Pacific at the Ferrell Center.
Baylor (4-0) shot over 50 percent for the fourth straight game; as a team, the Lady Bears are shooting 53 percent on the year. Pacific (0-3) shot 35 percent from the floor, the highest of any Baylor opponent this season, but was unable to stop the Lady Bears' attack.
Sophomore Sophia Young led Baylor with 15 points and has scored in double digits in all four games this year; the sophomore is averaging a team-high 18.0 points per game. Young also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her 19th career double-double, tied for seventh-best in program history.
A strong first-half defensive effort combined with Baylor's strong shooting propelled the Lady Bears to their fourth straight easy win. Baylor opened the game on a 16-1 run as the Tigers missed their first nine shots and coasted to a 45-18 halftime lead, the squad's second-largest halftime lead of the year. The Lady Bears are averaging a 23-point lead at the half through the first four games.
Five Lady Bears scored in double digits, the third time Baylor has accomplished that feat in four games. In addition to Young's 15 points, Steffanie Blackmon and Ebony Jackson each scored 13 points, Jessika Stratton added 12 points and Dionne Brown came off the bench for 11 points.
Stratton hit four 3-pointers Monday, moving her into a tie for third place all-time at Baylor. Stratton matched Mandy Hayworth's career total of 90 3-pointers, set between 1996 and 2000.
Senior forward Gillian d'Hondt led Pacific with 13 points before fouling out late in the second half.
Baylor hits the road for the first time in 2003-2004 this weekend, heading to Houston for a pair of games in the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational. The Lady Bears face Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. Friday at Rice's Autry Court, then will battle either the Owls or Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
NOTES: The Lady Bears have won their four games by an average of 41.5 points per game... Baylor improved to 1-0 all-time against Pacific... The Lady Bears are now 38-1 in regular-season non-conference games under head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson, including a 24-0 mark at home.
