Box Score

WACO, Texas - Six Lady Bears scored double-digit point totals as the Baylor women's basketball team defeated Nicholls State Saturday night, 93-44.

For the second straight night, Baylor (2-0) held its opponent to under 50 points and to less than 35 percent shooting from the floor. Nicholls State (0-1) shot just 23 percent (14-for-60) in its season opener.

Junior All-America candidate Steffanie Blackmon led the Lady Bears with 18 points, while fellow junior and preseason All-American Sophia Young recorded her first double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Freshmen Monique Jones (15 points) and Emily Niemann (10 points) each notched 10-plus points for Baylor, as did sophomores Ebony Jackson (14 points) and Chameka Scott (11 points).

The stifling Lady Bear defense, which held Mississippi State to just 17 points in the second half Friday night, topped that by limiting Nicholls State to just 12 points in the first half Saturday. That marked the third-fewest points Baylor has ever allowed in the first half of a game, and the 32- point halftime lead was the fifth-largest in Lady Bear history.

Junior Marneshia Bryant led Nicholls State with 10 points and four rebounds in her first game after transferring from Weatherford Junior College.

The Lady Bears look to push their record to 3-0 for the fourth straight year next Saturday, when Baylor hosts Washington State at 8 p.m. at the Ferrell Center as part of a men's/women's doubleheader.
