WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's basketball team wrapped up the 2003 exhibition season with an 82-33 win Monday night against the Perik Jumpers, an all-star team from The Netherlands.
Sophomore Sophia Young, a preseason All-American, and freshman Emily Niemann each recorded double-doubles to lead the Lady Bears. Niemann led Baylor with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while Young had 17 points and a team-high 12 boards.
Baylor held the Jumpers to just 21 percent shooting from the floor (10-of-48). After trailing 5-4 four-and-a-half minutes into the game, the Lady Bears ran off an 18-0 run over nine minutes and took a 30-10 lead into the half. Baylor outscored the visitors 52-23 in the second half to coast to the win.
The Jumpers, who fell to 0-8 on their tour of the United States, were led in scoring by Chelsea Greer (11 points) and in rebounding by Rhona McKenzie (game-high 15 boards).
The Lady Bears begin their regular season schedule Friday night at home against Mississippi State; game time is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $2 at Waco-area Fazoli's restaurants.
Baylor also plays at home Saturday, hosting Nicholls State at 6 p.m. as part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The Baylor men face Texas Southern Saturday at 8 p.m. in their season opener. Fans can get into the men's game Saturday night free with a ticket stub from the women's game vs. Nicholls State. Fans also can get $2 off tickets to either of Saturday's basketball games by bringing a toy to donate for Santa's Workshop.
