WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's basketball team pulled away late and coasted to a 100-77 win over the Houston Jaguars in the Lady Bears' first exhibition game of the 2003-2004 season Thursday night at the Ferrell Center.
Sophomore Sophia Young, a preseason all-America selection by Street and Smith's Magazine, led Baylor with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Baylor's second preseason all-America, junior Steffanie Blackmon, recorded 14 points and nine rebounds while continuing to recover from a knee injury suffered this summer.
Five Lady Bears recorded double-digit point totals. In addition to Young and Blackmon, senior Dionne Brown scored 13 points and had seven rebounds. Freshman Monique Jones had 14 points and eight rebounds, while fellow freshman Emily Niemann had 14 points (including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers) and seven boards.
Baylor improved to 5-0 in the last five seasons against the Jaguars, a program based out of Houston that gives former college players a chance to continue their careers. Nekisha Henderson, a former all-Southwest Conference player at Texas in the early 1990s, led the Jaguars with 30 points. Former Lady Bear Mandy Hayworth (1996-2000) knocked down 10 points for Houston, one of three Jaguars to score 10+ points.
The Lady Bears face the Perik Jumpers, an all-star team from the Netherlands, Monday at 7 p.m. in the Ferrell Center in their second and final exhibition game. The regular season opens at home against Mississippi State on Nov. 21.
