COMING UP...
Baylor and Iowa State will meet for the first, and possibly the only time, this season. The two teams are in opposite divisions thus meet only once a year in regular season. The Lady Bears return home after a mid-week game at Colorado while Iowa State travels to Waco after hosting Kansas State in Ames on Wednesday.
Iowa State, 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12, comes into the game riding a two-game winning streak. They posted a 58-53 road victory over Nebraska and upset No. 3 Kansas State (74-69) in Ames on Wednesday.
The Lady Bears started off the season winning 12 of their first 13 games but have since dropped four of their last five. Their five losses have been to Montana State, #8 Texas Tech, #20 Texas, #22 Oklahoma and Colorado.
THE LADY BEARS...
Despite having a young squad, the Lady Bears are posting some impressive numbers.
Sophomore Steffanie Blackmon (Dallas/Rowlett HS) leads the Lady Bears and ranks No. 4 in the Big 12 in scoring with 18.2 points a game. Freshman Sophia Young (St. Vincent, West Indies/Evangel Academy, Shreveport, La.) ranks second at 11.8. Two other Lady Bears also average in double-digits in scoring. Junior post Dionne Brown (Georgetown/Texas Tech) just broke into double digits with her 13-point performance against Colorado, she checks in at 10.2. Junior Jessika Stratton (Colorado, Springs, Colo./Coronado HS) dropped out of double digits for one game but bounced back with 13 points against Colorado and now averages 10.1.
Young, a 6-1 freshman, is the Lady Bears' and Big 12's leading rebounder grabbing 8.9 a game. Young ranks first in scoring, rebounding and steals and second in blocked shots among Big 12 Conference freshmen. Steffanie Blackmon is close behind Young with 8.2 an outing.
Chelsea Whitaker (Dallas/Skyline HS) leads the squad in assists with 5.11 a game. Stratton ranks in second with 4.44 a contest. Stratton dished out a career-high 13 assists against Mercer and Whitaker has had three games where she tallied nine assists.
The Lady Bears have three players that combine for 103 blocks. Steffanie Blackmon leads the way with 40, Melanie Hamerly (Orange/Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS) follows closely with 36 and Sophia Young has 27 on the season.
THE OPPONENT...
Iowa State
The Iowa State Cyclones, 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12, come into the game riding a two-game winning streak. They posted a 58-53 road victory over Nebraska and upset No. 3 Kansas State (74-69) in Ames on Wednesday.
Only one Cyclone averages in double figures in scoring but two others are flirting with double digit scoring averages. Senior Lindsey Wilson, a 5-9 guard, leads the cyclones with 17.7 points a game. Anne O'Neil and Lisa Kriener score 9.9 and 9.7 points, respectively. Kriener, a 6-2 sophomore, leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 a contest.
THE COACHES...
In just her third season as Baylor's head coach, Kim Mulkey-Robertson has led the Lady Bears to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, a final national ranking of No. 7 last season and a second place finish in the highly-competitive Big 12 Conference. The 2000 inductee to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame has a career record of 61-20 in her two-plus seasons at Baylor.
Iowa State's Bill Fennelly (William Penn College, 1979) is in his 8th season as the Cyclones' head coach and the 15th season as a head coach. He owns a career record of 336-121 at Iowa State and is 336-121 overall.
COMMON OPPONENTS...
The two teams have just two common opponent so far this season, Missouri and Colorado. Both teams lost at Colorado, ISU dropped 64-63 decision, while Baylor lost 66-59. Both teams have hosted the Missouri Tigers. Baylor posted a 71-65 win over the Tigers and the Cyclones dropped an 86-55 contest.
SERIES RECORDS...
Baylor vs. Iowa State - The two teams are tied in the series 4-4. Baylor leads the series in Waco 2-1 and has won the last two contests. Baylor posted two victories over the Cyclones last season, one in Ames and one in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. The victory in Ames by the Lady Bears (95-91) was Baylor's first victory in Hilton Coliseum.
