WACO, Texas - Freshman Benedikt Dorsch became Baylor's first-ever singles tournament champion with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over fellow teammate No. 26 Zoltan Papp in the finals of the Baylor Intercollegiates on Monday at Baylor's Tennis Center.
"Zoltan played very well and I was passive. That's his game, pressure on the other guy. It's tough to play your own teammate, but when playing in a normal tournament you want to make points," said Dorsch.
Dorsch, a native from Germany, defeated other ranked players No. 28 David Loewenthal of Wake Forest, No. 66 Stuart Waters of Iowa, and No. 97 DJ Spice of Wake Forest to earn the singles title.
"For an unranked guy, winning this is pretty special, " Head coach Matt Knoll said. "The level of play was very high in the first two sets. Both guys played the best they could play. Benedict proved to be solid and gave his all. He is all about toughness."
Other winners on the day were singles consolation winner Baylor's Ivor Lovrak who defeated Texas' Ryan Hammond, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play Texas' duo of Jimmy Haney and Peter Stroer swept past New Mexico's Divan Coetzee and Bart Scott by a score of 8-3.
