WACO, Texas - Former Texas Tech player Dionne Brown will be enrolling at Baylor in the fall and Kelly Sords, a sophomore post, has left the basketball team Baylor Lady Bear head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson announced Wednesday.
Brown, a 6-2 forward/center, from Georgetown, Texas, will enroll in Baylor after completing summer courses at Austin Community College. Prior to enrolling at ACC, Brown spent three semesters at Texas Tech where she averaged 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. As a sophomore she started in five of the six games she played in, she appeared in 26 games as a freshman. At Georgetown High School, playing for coach Rhonda Farney, Brown was named to several all-state teams her senior season and throughout her career earned several all-district honors as well. She averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds a game her senior season.
Brown will be classified as a junior and will be eligible for competition on Dec. 11 but will be able to practice with the team prior to that.
"Dionne will add a much needed presence in the paint for us. In addition, her familiarity and experience with the Big 12 will benefit the team," said Mulkey-Robertson.
Brown's signing brings Baylor's total to four. Ebony Jackson, Chameka Scott and Sophia Young all signed National Letters Intent to attend Baylor.
Baylor 2002-03 signees:
Dionne Brown - 6-2 forward/center, Georgetown, Texas (Texas Tech/Georgetown HS)
Ebony Jackson - 5-5 guard, Arlington, Texas (Arlington Sam Houston HS)
Chameka Scott - 5-11 guard, Houston, Texas (Clear Brook HS)
Sophia Young - 6-1, forward, St. Vincent, West Indies (Evangel Academy, Shreveport, La.)
Sords, a 6-3 post, appeared in 29 of Baylor's 33 games last season as a freshman. The Austin native (Westlake HS) averaged 3.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 8.8 minutes a game in her first season of competition. Sords redshirted the 2000-01 season due to a stress fracture in her right leg.
"Kelly blindsided me with this decision last week, she said she's been contemplating this for a while. Her heart's just not in basketball anymore," commented Mulkey-Robertson. "Kelly indicated that she'll remain a student at Baylor and be our biggest supporter. We wish Kelly all the best."
