WACO, Texas - Baylor's Lanie Millar (track and field) and Tim Hartshorn (baseball) were two of 13 student-athletes honored by the Big 12 Conference with $5,000 postgraduate scholarships, the league announced Tuesday.

Millar was the 2002 Big 12 champion in the indoor 800 meters, as well as the conference runner-up in the event at the outdoor championships. A two-time NCAA qualifier in the 800 meters, Millar posted her best finish at the 2002 Outdoor Championships where she finished 14th overall while recorded the third fastest time in Baylor school history (2:06.66). The senior co-captain rewrote the record books in her final season, shattering the school records in both the indoor and outdoor 800 meters with times of 2:06.34 and 2:06.08, respectively. A letterwinner in both cross country and track, Millar was honored as Baylor's 2001 Outstanding Student in the College of Arts and Sciences. Hailing from St. Louis Mo., she graduated in May with a double major in English and Spanish and was named the 2002 Female Student-Athlete of the Year for her efforts.

Hartshorn, a fifth-year senior from Long Beach, Calif., earned his third straight Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2002. Serving as co-team captain, Hartshorn began the season on a tear and earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the Astros College Classic in February. He appeared in 57 of Baylor's 62 games, batting .287 and finishing fifth on the team with 42 runs scored. A biology/pre-med major, Hartshorn graduated in May and is headed to med school in the fall of 2003.

Tim Hartshorn, a Baylor baseball player, was one of 13 student-athletes to recieve a postgraduate scholarship from the Big 12.

For the second year in a row, two Bears were selected by the league to receive this honor. Last season saw track and field's Kerry O'Bric and men's tennis' Mark Williams recognized by the league. Doug Maziur (track and field) earned Baylor's only other selection, in 1997-1998. A committee of three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection group for the prestigious awards, which help the youngsters to continue their formal education.

Criteria for these awards include a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the scholar-athlete's respective institution, and completion of athletics' eligibility. The scholar-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection as postgraduate scholarship recipients and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years after they graduate.

The $2,500 individual annual grants began in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999, and have provided $327,500 in financial aid since May 1997 to deserving recipients.
