Track Dominates Dr Pepper Invitational

Final Stats

WACO, Texas - Winning 14 individual event titles between both the men's and women's teams Baylor track and field dominated the competition Saturday at the Dr Pepper Invitational.

Senior Michael Smith paced the Baylor men winning both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles with times of 14.31 and 51.79, respectively, in his first outdoor meet of the season.

Five other athletes on the men's side also claimed top honors for the Bears. Freshman Darold Williamson returned to his winning ways in the 400, running a meet-best time of 47.50 in the first outdoor collegiate competition of his career. Williamson also anchored the gold-medal winning mile relay team that ran to a 3:12.32 finish.

Seniors Jon Capron and Jim Autenreith also took home first-place finishes for the Bears, as Capron won the 800-meter run in 1:53.87 and Autenreith beat out the competition in the pole vault, clearing 17-2 ?. Sophomore Kyle King turned in Baylor's other top performance, easily winning the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:53.98.

On the women's side Baylor reigned supreme in the relays as both the 4x100 team and the mile relay ran to first-place finishes with time of 45.84 and 3:45.04, respectively.

Trying out a new event, senior Lanie Millar still came away with an outstanding performance, winning the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:33.78, a mark that was over seven seconds faster then the nearest competitor.

A pair of freshman also claimed first-place honors today, as April Holliness won the triple jump competition and Candice Kolb finished on top in the 5,000-meter run. Holliness' distance of 41-0 ? marks a personal best in the event for the season, while Kolb's time of 18:12.36 was her second-best effort of the year.

Not to be overshadowed by the newcomers, seniors Barbara Petrahn and Alisha Hooker walked away with individual titles of their own. Petrahn won the 200 meters with a mark of 24.01, while Hooker edged out the competition in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.14-second clocking.

The Bears will return to action Saturday, March 30 when they compete at the UH-hosted Houston Invitational.
