WACO, Texas - Baylor's Sophia Young was selected Big 12 Rookie of the Week and Iowa State's Lindsey Wilson was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week in a vote of a media panel, the conference office announced Monday. The selections were made based on games played through the holiday break from Dec. 17-29.
Young notched two of her six double-doubles in victories against UCLA and Mercer to help Baylor extend its winning streak to five games. The 6-1 freshman post player scored 12 points and hauled down 13 rebounds against the Bruins on Dec. 19. Young added her second double-double versus Mercer, tying her career-high with 15 points and also grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds in the win. She also recorded a career-high five steals and four assists. On the season, Young leads BU in rebounding at 9.9 per game and is averaging 10.9 points per game with a 54.7 percent shooting average.
Young is Baylor's first player to be honored by the Big 12 this season.
Wilson, a 5-9 senior point guard, enjoyed a stellar week for the Cyclones by posting three-straight 20-plus point scoring performances. The Seattle, Wash., native opened the week scoring 22 points in her homecoming at Washington on Dec. 22 before turning in 21 points and eight assists versus Detroit-Mercy on Dec. 28 in the South Padre Island Shootout. Wilson went on to record 20 points versus top-ranked Duke in the championship game of that tournament on Dec. 29, while earning all-tournament honors.
