WACO, Texas -
Baylor's Whitney Barrett, Emily Fukuchi and Melissa Humke were named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VI Women's Soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Thursday.
Barrett and Humke were named to the first team, while Fukuchi was awarded second-team honors. As first-team selections, Barrett and Humke are each automatically nominated for Academic All-America honors.
Barrett, a senior from Albuquerque, N.M., earned her second-straight Academic All-District selection. Humke, a junior from The Woodlands, Texas, and Fukuchi, a junior from Cerritos, Calif., each received her first all-district honor.
Baylor joined Ole Miss as the only two schools to each have three players named to the All-District VI team. The Bears also were one of only two programs to have two first-team selections, with New Mexico being the other.
The 2002 season is the second year that Verizon/CoSIDA has selected soccer-specific Academic All-America teams; prior to the 2001-2002 school year, soccer players were lumped in with a number of other sports for one At-Large ballot. Under that format, Dawn Greathouse was the only Baylor player to be named Academic All-District, earning selection in 1998-1999 and again in 1999-2000. The Baylor goalkeeper was named to the Academic All-America At-Large third team in 1999-2000.
To be considered for selection to an all-academic team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible. Awards are voted on by members of CoSIDA.
