BOZEMAN, MT - Melanie Hamerly scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Baylor Lady Bears to a 78-46 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in the GranTree Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Montana State. Baylor is now 4-0 on the season.
The Lady Bears started the game in impressive fashion, leaping out to a 17-0 lead, holding the Spartans scoreless until the 12:32 mark. Baylor would take a 39-19 lead into the lockerroom at the half. Hamerly, a 6-5 sophomore post, scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half to provide the bulk of Baylor's 39 second half points. Baylor shot 54.5 percent for the game while holding the Spartans to 24.3 percent.
Sophomore post Steffanie Blackmon produced her second double-double of the season with a 16 point-12 rebound performance. The team's lone senior, Stasha Richards, scored a season-high 12 points and also hauled down eight rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists. Junior guard Jessika Stratton would add 11 points, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and also contributed seven assists and five rebounds.
"I thought our kids set the tone early, they were very aggressive," said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson. "I didn't know what to expect since this is our first road trip. I'm proud of the way we worked in the paint, we were very aggressive."
The Lady Bears will play tournament host Montana State on Saturday at 8 pm (CST).
