THE LADY BEARS...
By defeating Texas Southern on Tuesday evening, 103-50, Lady Bears extended their record in regular season non-conference games under head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson to 26-0. Baylor is now 3-0 on the season.
For the second time in three games, the Bears had five players in double figures. Steffanie Blackmon (17), Melanie Hamerly (15), Jessika Strattton (14), Jordan Davis (10) and Chelsea Whitaker, (10) each tallied double figures against Princeton and against Texas Southern Blackmon (22), Davis (15), Stratton (15), Hamerly (14) and Sophia Young (15) recorded double digits.
Steffanie Blackmon (Dallas/Rowlett HS), with her 22 points against Texas Southern, has led the Lady Bears in scoring in all three games this season. In fact, Blackmon was a perfect 11-for-11 from the floor against TSU which ranks as the second best shooting percentage game for a Baylor player. Lanita Luckey holds the Baylor record hitting 12-of-12 shots against UC-Santa Barbara in 1991.
Blackmon leads the Lady Bears on the season in scoring with 21.3 a game. Four other players also average double-digits in scoring. Junior guard Jessika Stratton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado HS) ranks second on the team with 14.0, sophomore post Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas/Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS) checks in at 11.7, freshman forward Sophia Young (St. Vincent, West Indies/Evangel Academy, Shreveport, La.) scores 11.3 and sophomore guard Jordan Davis (Celina, Texas/Celina HS) averages 10.0.
Young leads the Baylor squad in rebounding at 9.3 a game. She is followed closely by Steffanie Blackmon at 6.7 and Hamerly with 5.3.
Hamerly has registered 14 blocks in three games this season, just two off her season total of 16 last season.
SLOWLY BUT SURELY...
The Lady Bears are quickly getting back to full strength. Junior Chanelle Fox (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS) could see her first action of the season this weekend. She was given permission by her knee surgeon to return to full participation. That leaves just freshman Abiola Wabara (Parma, Italy) sidelined by an injury. Due to NCAA transfer rules, junior Dionne Brown (Georgetown, Texas/Texas Tech) will not be able to play until Dec. 10th.
MONTANA STATE
In her first season as Montana State's head coach last year, Robin Potera posted an 18-11 record. The Bobcats opened up the 2002-03 campaign with an 86-74 victory over the University of Portland on Saturday and followed that up with an 81-55 victory over Washington State on Monday, both games were in Bozeman. Potera is now 20-11 at MSU and 144-72 in nine seasons as a head coach.
Isabel Stubbs, a 6-2 senior forward, leads a contingent of three Bobcats averaging in double figures. In fact, Stubbs is averaging a double-double with 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds a game. She is followed by Kati Burrows' 17.5 points and Sheila Hutchinson's 10.5 a game.
Montana State will play Northern Illinois before facing the Lady Bears on Saturday. Fox underwent ACL reconstruction on April 1 of last season and had further arthroscopic surgery in October and is now released for full participation. Wabara underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right knee on November 1 and will be sidelined until at least January.
