Men's Hoops Cruises to First Exhibition Win

WACO, Texas - Five Bears scored in double digits, including three with 20-plus points, as the Baylor men's basketball team defeated the Houston Superstars 128-55 Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center in Baylor's first exhibition game of the 2002-2003 season.

Sophomore John Lucas led Baylor with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Lucas added nine assists and four rebounds in just 23 minutes of action.

Sophomores Kenny Taylor and Ellis Kidd each scored 21 points on the night. Kidd, a transfer from Seminole State College, had two rebounds and two assists in his first action wearing a Baylor uniform. Taylor and Kidd each hit five 3-pointers to tie for the game high.

Kidd was not the only new Bear to shine in his Baylor debut. Junior transfer Terrance Thomas, another of the Bears making their first appearances at the Ferrell Center, scored 17 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Carlton Dotson, a junior transfer from Paris Junior College, led the Bears with eight rebounds.

Steven Ramsey led the Superstars with 15 points, while Kevin Hampton pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Tim Ford had two assists to pace Houston in that category.

As a team, the Bears shot 57 percent (51-of-89), including a 56 percent mark from 3-point land (19-of-34). Baylor had 17 steals and forced 28 turnovers.

The Bears began their exhibition season without all-Big 12 forward Lawrence Roberts, who is out until early December with a stress fracture in his left leg.

Baylor plays its second and final exhibition game Tuesday against Texas BlueChip. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
