Two of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On the past weekend:
"We're coming off a weekend versus a top-25 team -- probably the hottest team in the country besides Nebraska. As usual, opportunities presented themselves, but we didn't take advantage of them."
On this week's opponent:
"Texas Tech was our last win in conference... They're a feisty team; they're gonna come out and battle us. Unfortunately, we're not the team we were when we beat them."
On the team's state of mind:
"Our attitude is 'if not now, when?' We're not waiting for the season to be over to make changes; we're gonna try and make it happen right now."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On the team's final home game of the season:
"I think it would be a great thing for Baylor University if the people who care about this institution would come out and support the team this week. Regardless of how you feel about Kevin Steele, it would be a good demonstration that you care about this team, a good demonstration to the new coach, and most importantly a good demonstration for the Texas high school players, that the Baylor family cares about this team."
"I think we need to move on. One of the ways we can do that is to show that we all care for this team. It sends a message for the future. Some coach out there is going to take this team; it sends a message that if they take care of business, the support is there. But the biggest statement is to the recruits in the state of Texas."
On why he cares about Baylor's future:
"Because it's the right thing to do for these young people. This is a good place; there are good people here. Baylor can win, and will win. I want to do what's right for the student-athletes and for the program."
On this week's game against No. 4 Oklahoma:
"They're a lot like the team we played last week... Offensively, they're a little bit different than what we've seen in the past... They're not just a spread offense; they run a lot of different formations... Their quarterback has played very, very well for them; he's progressively gotten better and better."
"We're looking forward to the opportunity. We're banged up, but no more than is usual at this time of year."
"He [OU RB Quentin Griffin] has great balance. He's quick. He's got great vision, and the burst to hit the home run. When he's gets in the hole he's got that extra gear."
On the team after last week's news:
"Last week, as expected, was very emotional for everybody. There were some uncertainties early in the week that we had to work through as a group, with some individual time, too. I thought the team handled it as well as could be expected."
