Waco - Sheila Lambert was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week in a vote of a media panel for games played from Jan. 21-27 it was announced today. Kansas State's Laurie Koehn earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors.
Lambert, a 5-7 senior guard from Seattle, Wash., led No. 15 Baylor to two Big 12 victories last week, beating Texas A&M (95-61) at home and posting a road win over No. 13 Texas (80-70). It was Baylor's third straight win over the Longhorns.
For the week she averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 assists, 4.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds. In addition she was 16-of-27 from the floor for 59.3 percent, 3-of-4 (.750) from three-point range and 9-of-12 (.750) from the free throw line.
Against No. 13 Texas, she tallied a game-high 26 points, 18 of which came in the first half, and added seven assists, four steals and five rebounds. In the final 1:30 with Texas threatening, she hit a 3-pointer and a free throw, dished out an assist, stole the ball and grabbed a rebound to preserve the victory.
Lambert has led the Lady Bears in scoring in 11 of their 19 games this season and ranks among the Big 12's leaders in scoring, assists and steals.
This marks the first time this season a Baylor player has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
