Waco, Texas - For being paired together in doubles for the first time, Baylor's Reiner Neurohr and Markus Hornung made a very strong showing. The duo became Baylor men's tennis' first-ever tournament champion with an 8-5 victory over Texas' Jean Simon and Jose Zarhi in the finals of the Baylor Intercollegiates on Sunday at Baylor's Tennis Center.
"There's a rumor in the collegiate tennis community that Baylor can't play doubles, I think we made a statement today," said Neurohr.
The young team, Neurohr's a sophomore and Hornung's a freshman, broke out to a 2-0 lead when Neurohr held serve and the Bears broke Simon's serve. Hornung dropped his service but the Bear duo took the next two games to go up 4-1. Simon and Hornung each held serve but after that the Texas duo took two straight games, not allowing Baylor a point in either game, to close to within one, 5-4. With Simon serving the 10th game, the two teams dueled back and fourth when, with the score advantage Baylor, Neurohr lobbed a shot to the back corner to put the Bears up. With the match at 6-4, Hornung held serve when, at 30-30, Texas hit long then lost a point for abuse of equipment to give Neurohr and Horning the advantage 7-4. In what proved to be the final game, the Baylor duo out-dueled the Longhorns in fast and furious volleys at the net for the match.
"I thought Reiner and Markus played a very aggressive match. They communicated well, had a good plan and stuck to it," said head coach Matt Knoll.
UT-Arlington's Andy Leber dropped the first set but came back to win the singles title from TCU's Toni Gordon. Leber, the tournament's five-seed won by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6.
