WACO, Texas - Baylor student-athletes Mark Williams (tennis) and Barrett Hall (track) were named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VI Men's Spring At-Large teams. Williams was one of 10 players selected to the first team, while Hall represented the Bears among 10 second-team honorees.
Williams, a senior majoring in finance and information systems, earned his second-straight academic all-district selection with a 3.91 grade point average. During his senior season, the Perth, Australia native broke the school records for career singles wins and career doubles wins while earning all-Big 12 accolades in singles and doubles. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association District VI honored Williams with the Arthur Ashe Award while nominating him for the national Rafael Osuna Award, both distinctions are given based on sportsmanship and leadership.
A four-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, Williams will look to repeat his 2000 academic all-America selection this season. All first team academic all-district selections are automatically nominated for the national team.
Hall, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., placed first in the 800 at the Sooner Indoor Classic, second in the event at the Oklahoma All-Comers and third at the Tellez Invitational. At the Big 12 Indoors, he placed eighth in the 800. Hall also ran the third leg on Baylor's distance medley relay team that placed sixth at the Texas Relays. Earlier this spring, Hall was named to the Academic All-Big 12 team after posting a 3.96 GPA in business administration.
