WACO, TEXAS - It doesn't get much closer than this.
The 18th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team lost to No. 16 Oklahoma State 4-3 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships, held at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Bears (20-6) battled back after losing the doubles point, winning three of the first five singles matches to finish, but lost the final singles match in three sets as Oklahoma State (22-3) got the 4-3 win.
"OSU played well," Baylor head coach Dave Luedtke said. "They're a very good team, solid from top to bottom - much like us. I'm proud of our fight, we hung in and battled even after falling behind. We did everything we could do."
In what would prove to be the deciding match, Baylor's Paola Stephen lost the first set 6-3 but rebounded to win the second set 6-1 and take a 1-0 lead in the third set. OSU's Katia Vasylyeva won the next five points to go up 5-1 and ultimately won the third set 6-2 to give OSU the dual match victory.
Baylor started the day without the fire that the team showed Friday. Katja Kovac and Jahnavi Parekh won their match at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, but OSU claimed identical 8-4 victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the point.
Kovac got the ball rolling back Baylor's way with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over OSU's Dominika Olszewska. The Cowgirls' Linda Faltynkova jumped on Baylor's Vida Mulec at No. 3 singles, however, blanking Mulec in the first set and taking the second set 6-3 to put OSU back on top, 2-1.
Parekh gave Baylor a lift with a tough 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, but the momentum was again lost when Karin Andersson lost at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. While Stephen fell behind in the third set, Frida Borjesson claimed her career-high ninth straight win, 7-5, 6-2 , that again tied the dual match score.
The Bears will now turn their minds towards the NCAA Tournament. The announcement of teams and sites will take place Thursday.
