WACO, Texas - Former Baylor soccer players Courtney Saunders and Dawn Greathouse were selected on Sunday in the supplemental draft of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA).
Saunders was taken in the first round (seventh overall pick) of the supplemental draft by the Philadelphia Charge. Greathouse was a second round pick (15th overall) by the Washington Freedom.
Both Saunders and Greathouse were honored as all-Americans in 1998 as the Bears won Baylor's first Big 12 title in any sport. Saunders played played forward for Baylor from 1996-1999 and holds school records for most goals, assists and game-winning goals in a career.
Greathouse was Baylor's goalkeeper from 1997-2000 and holds virtually every Baylor single-game and career record for goalkeepers. She finished her career having played 7160 career minutes, sixth-best in NCAA Division I history.
Sunday's draft followed the inaugural WUSA draft, which took place in December. Baylor assistant coach Rebecca Hornbacher was taken in the 14th round (109th overall pick) by the New York Power in that draft. Sunday's supplemental draft lasted four rounds and primarily focused on current collegiate players.
The WUSA will launch in April with eight teams: the Atlanta Beat, Bay Area CyberRays, Carolina Tempest, Boston Breakers, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spiritand Washington (D.C) Freedom. The WUSA will feature practically all of the members of the 1999 World Cup Champion and 2000 silver medal winning-team.
