Lady Bears Post Hoops Victory

Honolulu - Seniors Danielle Crockrom and Sheila Lambert led the No. 9 Baylor Lady Bears to their eighth victory of the season with a 70-65 win over the University of Hawai'i Wahine in Honolulu on Friday in the Tesoro Invitational.

Crockrom notched her sixth double-double of the season with a 24 point, 10 rebound performance while Lambert scored 23 points and dished out five assists.

The Lady Bears streaked out to an 11 point lead, 18-7, with 12:07 remaining in the first half. The Wahine would whittle away at the lead mainly from the free throw line. They tallied only six first half field goals but were 18-of-22 from the free throw line to trail by two, 32-30, going into the locker room. In contrast, the Lady Bears made 14 first half field goals and were 3-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The second half was a close one, right down to the final minutes of the game. Hawai'i tied the game at 32 all with 17:30 remaining in the game. The Wahine would take the lead at the 16:51 mark 36-35 on a layup by point guard Janka Gabrielova. Hawai'i would go on to lead by as much as four before the Lady Bears finally reclaimed the lead for good, 49-47, on a jumper by Crockrom with 8:58 remaining in the game. Down the stretch, Hawaii got no closer than two, 64-62, before six Baylor free throws, four by Lambert and two by freshman post Kelly Sords, put the game out of reach.

April Atuaia and Natasja Allen were the only two Hawai'i players to score in double figures. Autaia tallied 23 while Allen scored 10.

With the victory, Baylor moves to 8-0 on the season while Hawai'i falls to 4-2. Baylor will play the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. central time. Illinois-Chicago and Hawai'i will meet on Sunday.
