Two of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On last week's results:
"We're coming off a match against Oklahoma that was a good match all-around... We've made a line-up change with Tisha Schwartz now in Sunny Nicholas' position... Tisha performed at a rate which was why we made the move in the first place."
Looking ahead:
"We've had six days off, which has helped us rest and recuperate from some injuries, and we've had time to work on our execution."
"We have four matches left in conference, with three of those teams ahead of us in the standings right now... We think our best volleyball is still ahead of us."
"I'd like to think so [that Baylor can win three of its last four matches]... Our goal is still 20 wins to get us out of the bubble state."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On last week's game:
"I was shocked, particularly at halftime. Not to take anything away from Missouri... I was shocked about us. I knew we'd have a little problem with Randy and Bobby both out, but I thought we could handle it. Obviously we couldn't."
"Our offensive game, even with the first half, was probably the most productive in a long time... We had some good plays, drove the football... All in all, we've gotta get over the hump... If we can get it over the hump even one game, I think everything else will fall into place."
On this week's opponent, Oklahoma State:
"We've got our hands full. This will be a dogfight at worst, and we're the ones who will have to make it that way because I'm sure they'll come in as a quite confident group."
On Baylor quarterback Josh Zachry:
"Josh did not practice yesterday. Josh was the starter and got injured, you don't lose your starting job because of injury. He's projected to start if he's cleared by the medical staff, and I have no reason to think he won't be."
On Baylor wide receiver Reggie Newhouse:
"Reggie is the consummate gentleman, you want your son to grow up to be like Reggie... On the football field, he's one of those guys that goes out and executes play after play after play... He can make plays. Saturday, he probably did what we knew he could do all along, if you keep it inbounds and give it to him in close proximity, he's gonna make the play more times than not. That's what he did Saturday."
"He was not a high school receiver. When you play a guy at a position he didn't play in high school, there's going to be a developmental phase. Generally, it's the third year when those guys come into their own, and I think that's what's happening."
On the team's Big 12 Conference losing streak:
"We don't even think about that string.... You put things behind you and move on. You don't just sit there and count, you don't look back, you look forward. Is there anticipation, a challenge, a reaching for the next game? Yeah. But it's more because it is the next game... It's not a monkey [on the team's back], it's a gorilla, but I don't think about it. You think about winning the next game. It's been there so long that you just get strong enough to carry it. When it comes off, you might say 'that feels pretty good'... The focus is on winning the game, if only because it's the next game and we need a win. To dissect and say 'Why is it important?', it's important because it's the next game."
On prepping the team for the final conference game of the year:
"We stacked it up as far as to take it from this weekend to next weekend to our non-conference games next year. We talk about opportunity all the time, putting things behind you and focusing on what's ahead."
"We talked about the opportunity of building win after win and building momentum. We talked to the seniors about the legacy of finishing out strong. 4-7, going out with a conference win at home, our last conference game... The importance of what that builds, not only for this year for going into next year."
