Waco, Texas - Six Baylor men's tennis players and two women's players will participate in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles and doubles championships of the 2001-02 season. The men's ITA championships will be held at the Lincoln Tennis Center at Stone Mountain in Georgia while the women's tournament is taking place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Dubbed the "toughest hardcourt events of the fall collegiate season", the All-American Championships feature the top men's and women's players in NCAA Division I tennis. The ITA Men's All-American Championships will feature 15 of the top 20 seeded players in the country while the women's tournament, the Riviera Women's All-America Championships, is highlighted by the entire top 10 of the ITA preseason rankings.
Freshman Benni Becker and sophomore Reiner Neurohr will play in the Men's Qualifying Tournament in singles while the doubles teams of Neurohr-Zoltan Papp and Becker-Markus Hornung will combine to participate in doubles. The singles and doubles Qualifying Tournament will be played on Oct. 9-10. Playing in the Prequalifying Tournament, Oct. 5-8, will be Papp, Hornung, Cory Ross and Matias Marin in singles and the doubles team of Ross-Marin.
Senior Katja Kovac and junior Vida Mulec will travel to southern California to participate in the Qualifying Tournament of the ITA All-America Championships. Both women will play in singles from Oct. 9-10 and will combine to play doubles also.
Prior to the women's ITA Championships the Baylor women's team will play in the San Diego State Fall Classic. The Classic will cover three days, Oct. 5-7. On those same three days, some of the men's players will travel to San Antonio to play in the UTSA/Fairoaks C.C. Fall Invitational. Mike Garcia and Nathan McGregor will team up to play doubles and Garcia, McGregor and Armando Carrascosa will participate in the singles draw.
