Stone Mountain, Georgia - Freshmen Benni Becker and Markus Hornung saw their impressive run in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships come to an end on Friday with each losing in third round action in singles and losing in the quarterfinals in doubles.
"This was a good tournament for Benni and Markus, it was definitely a great start to their collegiate careers. Making the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles was superb," said Baylor head coach Matt Knoll. "I certainly expected them to play well but didn't expect Markus to win as many matches in a row as he did. Their energy level dropped off today, their concentration was not as intense, they were not quite as sharp mentally as they had been. Fatigue set in on them, especially for Markus."
Hornung was the only player still remaining from last weekend's 256-player prequalifying. He won nine straight matches in seven days of competition and played 10 matches in nine days. Amer Delic of Illinois finally halted Hornung's march through the tournament winning by scores of 6-4, 7-5. Hornung finished the tournament with a 9-1 record and is 10-2 in singles for the fall season.
After winning four straight matches in the tournament, Becker fell to No. 13 Tiago Ruffoni of Auburn 6-3, 7-6 (6). Becker's singles record for the fall season is 8-2.
Becker and Hornung won their second round match in doubles by posting a 9-7 victory over Portland's Peter Malacek and Travis Parrott who were ranked No. 17 nationally. In quarterfinals action the duo lost to ULCA's Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer, 8-3. The UCLA team was ranked 18th nationally.
Now Becker and Hornung return home for a well-deserved rest. In the meantime, Mike Garcia, Armando Carrascosa and Nathan McGregor are competing in the UTA Men's Fall Invitational this weekend.
