WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's and women's cross country teams will open their 2000 season here Saturday, hosting the Baylor Invitational at the Texas Farm Bureau Course. The Bears were scheduled to begin the campaign three weeks ago at the Rice Relays in Houston, but the meet was cancelled due to lightning.
One of the largest fields ever, 13 schools will be competing at the Baylor Invitational. Along with host Baylor, Dallas Baptist, Mary Hardin Baylor, Mississippi State (women only), North Texas, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State, Texas-Pan American, Southwest Texas State, Southwestern University, Texas A&M, Texas-Arlington and Texas Christian will be in action.
The women will run first, starting their 5,000-meter race at 9:30 a.m. The men will follow with a five-mile contest at 10:05 a.m. Several high school girls' heats will be held prior to the university division races, and several high school boys' heats will be held following the university division races.
Through the years, Baylor has done quite well in its own meet. Last season, the Bears swept both races in the team standings and current BU sophomore Ferenc Beskesi finished first in the men's race.
