Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head volleyball coach Brian Hosfeld:
On the past weekend:
"We did struggle a bit Friday vs. Santa Clara... We didn't show up that well. We were without one of our freshman starters, Amy Wallace, who was out with some knee problems."
"Our downfall against Arizona was their ability to be real physical at the net."
On Wednesday's conference opener against Texas Tech:
"As we head into Big 12 play tomorrow night against Texas Tech, they're coming off some big wins... They've got a transfer, a 6-7 senior who will be putting some balls away against us... We're gonna have to find ourselves attacking better."
Head soccer coach Nick Cowell:
On the past weekend:
"It was a good measuring stick for us. Losing 3-1 to [No. 9] USC was not a disgrace for us. However, we didn't play with a lot of confidence. We went in there with the attitude of not losing, rather than trying to win."
"Against UCLA, even though the scoreboard didn't indicate it, we were much better... The score was not reflective of our play. Overall, it was a good weekend in terms of knowing what we need to do to get better."
On the need for more offense:
"It's something that we stress daily, that people need to step up to take the pressure off Molly [Cameron]. We think some other people are close to stepping up. We had some chances this weekend."
"Our defense has been playing well. They're probably frustrated, because it's not translating into goals. They do their job, and the ball comes right back to them."
Head football coach Kevin Steele:
On having two weeks to prepare:
"It was a very physical open week. We told the guys we were going to approach this like it was two Mondays, two Tuesdays, two Wednesdays, two Thursdays and one Friday, because we didn't want guys to think it was a week off."
On Minnesota:
"They're a very physical team. They're big, they're strong and they run well. They're coming off an eight-win season, and they play with a lot of confidence."
"They are a big play offense... We're gonna have to eliminate the big play, win the kicking game and cut down on turnovers."
"They're gonna come in here, and it will take everything we've got and near perfection for us to have a chance to win this game."
"They're a good football team, and we really gotta do things well. But I think that if you throw the defenses in, that we played the option a week before they did, and it gives us a chance."
On Minnesota quarterback Asad Abdul-Khaliq:
"He's young, but he does some of the things that Michael Bishop did at Kansas State. He throws the deep ball well. He's got a strong arm, but he runs well, too."
On Minnesota's defense:
"They've got a very good pass rush, a good middle linebacker and good corners... The soul of that defense is right where it needs to be."
