SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 22 Baylor Bears lost to No. 4 Nebraska 7-1 in the second round of the Big XII Tournament. Baylor fell to 14-6-1 on the season, while the Huskers moved to 19-1-1.
"I was really proud of how we played. I think the score shows what a phenomenal team they are. Nebraska is just strong and fast. If that is not a Final Four team, then I don't know what is," head coach Nick Cowell said.
Shannon Tanaka put Nebraska on the board in the sixth minute of play when she scored off a 25-yard lob from Isabelle Morneau. Three minutes later, the Bears retaliated when Alsyon Miles netted a goal from six yards out. But then the Husker offense took over and the Bears never saw the back of the net again.
Amy Walsh scored in the 18th minute after beating Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse. Christine Gluck got the assist on the eight-yard goal. Kori Saunders added a third goal in the 36th minute with help from Jenny Benson and Sharolta Nonen. Christine Latham put in the first half's final goal on a 50-yard lob from the left side of the field.
While Baylor only took eight shots in the first half, compared to Nebraska's 10, the second half saw the Bears on the attack.
Sophomore midfielder Juli Goin entered the game in the final half after sitting out the first period due to a deep calf bruise suffered during Thursday's game. She and senior forward Courtney Saunders, along with senior midfielder Nikki Hales combined for a three shot series that was Baylor's best opportunity to score. Yet Nebraska goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc kept the Bears at bay.
Then the Husker offense took over again as Nonen put in a goal in the 72nd minute, and then assisted Breanna Boyd on a goal in the 78th minute. Latham added the final goal in the 83rd minute with help from Kelly Rheem and Carey Danica.
"I don't think they dominated the game seven goals to one. Nebraska makes the most of their chances and sticks them away. I thought despite the score, we stuck in there and played as hard as we could the whole game and never gave up.
"Actually we are pleased with how we played. Nebraska can blow people away. They have done that all year," Cowell said.
Baylor took nine shots on goal while the Huskers had 11. Greathouse ended the evening with four saves, while LeBlanc had eight.
The Bears will return to Waco Friday and await the announcement of the 1999 NCAA tournament field. The Huskers will play Missouri in the Big XII Championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers defeated Iowa State 2-1 earlier this evening.
