WACO, Texas - Two days after upsetting the seventh ranked Texas A&M Aggies, the Baylor soccer team lost to the University of Texas 2-4. The Bears fall to 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big XII play. The Longhorns move to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in league action.
Texas got things started early with a goal by Abby Gutowski in the 6th minute of play. Colleen Zea got the assist. In the 27th minute, Gutowski was in the right place at the right time as she deflected Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse's kick into the net. Gutowski helped on the Longhorn's third goal as she assisted Alanna Makinano in the 32nd minute. Texas took a 3-0 lead into the half.
Baylor bounded back with a goal from Courtney Saunders off Alyson Miles in the 46th minute of play. In the 75th minute, Danielle Gurney recorded her first goal of the season when Whitney Barrett served a ball to Nikki Hales who headed to Gurney. But, the Baylor comeback was stopped by a Texas goal from Colleen Zea in the 78th minute. Alanna Makinano got the assist.
The Bears took 20 shots on goal while Texas had six. Greathouse recorded two saves. Texas goalkeeper Cami Varnadore had 18.
Baylor returns to soccer action Friday against Oklahoma in Norman. Game time is 6 p.m.
