WACO, Texas - The 14th ranked Baylor Bears collected their third shutout of the season as the blanked Evansville 2-0 today. Baylor moves to 7-2-0 on the seaosn while Evnasville fell to 3-5-2.
Senior midfielder Nikki Hales started things off in the 12th minute when she nailed a shot off a deflected header from junior forward Gina Castellano which was the result of a corner kick from senior forward Courtney Saunders. Both Castellano and Saunders were awarded the assist. It was Hales seventh goal on the season.
Senior midfielder Britt Talley put in her first goal of the season when she sent a cross from 25 yards out sailing into the left corner of the net. That put Baylor up by two at the half.
Neither team scored in the second half, but sophomore midfielder Juli Goin and Evansville defender Elaine McAdams were red carded after a scuffle at midfield. Goin will miss Baylor's next game due to the penalty.
"It was a good win for us. We had talked about coming out and playing hard in the first half and putting teams away early. I felt like we accomplished that today. Our second half play was not as good, but I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty," head coach Nick Cowell said.
Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse collected her third shutout on the season. She tallied four saves on the day. Purple Aces goalkeepers' Beth Csukas and Katie Howard had a combined eight saves.
Next up for Baylor will be a mid-week match against SMU in Waco. The Wednesday game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Baylor soccer field.
