SMU Ends Baylor Win Streak

DALLAS, Texas - The Baylor University volleyball team defeated Butler before falling to Southern Methodist to finish second at the SMU Invitational in Dallas.
The tournament closed out with Baylor going up against host Southern Methodist. Game one started off strong with both teams trading kills and side outs before SMU got an early 3-0 lead. The Bears again rallied behind strong kills by Polk to take a 10-8 lead, but a momentum swing gave the game to the Mustangs 15-11.
BU found themselves in a familiar position down 10-2 in the second game before scoring eight consecutive points to tie it at 10-10.
The Mustangs recovered to make it 14-10, but Baylor rallied and completed a remarkable comeback to win 16-14 in the first game all season that required extra points.
The third game proved to be another tough one as there was a total of 11 side outs before SMU scored the first point. Mustang leads of 6-1, 9-3 and 12-4 were safe enough as they put it away 15-7.
Southern Methodist had a decisive advantage in hitting percentage in the game .268 to .172. In game four, it was Baylor's turn to start off strong as they built leads of 4-1 and 8-3 behind Polk's kills and sophomore Tatiana Kenon's blocks.
After SMU closed the gap to 8-5, it was all Bears from there cruising to 15-5 win. Baylor out-hit Southern Methodist .500 to -.087 in that game. In rally scoring, SMU went up 4-0 before Baylor cut the deficit to 4-3.
SMU got the lead back up to 8-4 and 11-6 before taking the game and the match 15-11. The loss was the first for Baylor on the season and the tem was one win shy of tying the 1993 squad's mark off nine straight. The 1993 team ended up placing second at the NIVC Tournament.
