Two of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On the team's situation at this point in the season:
"We haven't had a lot of positive things to talk about, but we have a couple of weeks left. That's time to make strides in this program and possibly make the NCAA Tournament."
"Unless this team is on all six pistons, we're pretty average... [However,] we beat K-State, and they're second in conference, and we've had several matches that could've gone either way."
On this week's opponents:
"We match up well with Texas A&M. We went four games here in Waco earlier this year. We need a solid performance from the entire team, plus we need Stevie Nicholas to have a good night."
"No. 1 Nebraska comes here Saturday. They're pretty physical all the way around... We're gonna put out best foot forward and play a good match."
On his two signees:
"We signed Dana Henry and Ashley Foster, two tremendous athletes from the Beaumont area. Dana, once she puts it all together, will be very intimidating at the net. She just needs experience. Ashley is a little faster than Dana. They played on the same team, and we look forward to them coming out. They're both physically very capable."
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
On last week's game against Missouri:
"Defensively, we were on our heels in terms of how we came out. We had to make some abrupt sideline adjustments, and with youth, they were hesitant. That showed in the first quarter, but as we built in the game, we got control of some things."
"Offensively, it was a tale of two halves. It was pretty bleak in the first half, as we saw some different blitzes and an excellent pass rusher."
"The coaches did a good job at halftime making adjustments -- we got 200 yards and 22 poitns in the second half. Now, we have to figure out how to get 200 yards and 22 points in the first half."
"Bush came out in the second half and ran the ball almost possessed. Josh Zachry, after a tough first half, produced good numbers. He'll go again this week."
On this week's opponent, Oklahoma State:
"Talent-wise, they're a very good football team. They have a big, strong defense... Nobody has run the ball well against them... so we'll have to catch and throw the ball this week to do anything."
"Their quarterback is a big, strong guy who runs well and has a very good throwing motion... Their team runs good routes... Their tailback is a strong guy who gets on a roll, he can roll up 200 yards on you."
On the team as a whole:
"We're not where I'd like to be right now, no... It's hard to process this year when the components have all changed [due to injuries]. That's not a problem once you've rebuilt, because you have depth... If we'd had Greg Cicero, Derek Lagway, Melvin Barnett and Andra Fuller all year, and we still produced like this, we'd really have to re-evaluate the process."
On recruiting:
"Recruiting is going well... We're making a pretty extensive effort, going looking for junior college players to replace the juniors and seniors... We need to help ourselves on the line of scrimmage with depth and size."
