Baylor Women's Cross Country Wins UNT Invitational

DENTON, Texas - Kara Newton finished 39 seconds ahead of the field here Friday night, leading Baylor's women's cross country to a first place finish at the University of North Texas Invitational. Baylor's team score of 16 points was better than the 22 points turned in by second-place Texas Christian.
Newton paced the field with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds in the three-mile run. Debbie Thornhill of host UNT finished a distant second with a time of 18:02. Baylor's Leah Marbach placed third with a time of 18:04, while Megan McCoin took seventh at 18:50. Erin Dixon's 18:56 was good enough for 10th, and Hannah Lodwick closed out the Baylor contingency with a 16th-place time of 19:45.
While the Baylor men did not run as a team, three Bears did participate in the men's five-mile run. Aaron Ward was the high finisher for Baylor with an eighth-place time of 26:48. Tristan Eager and Bill Thomas finished 17th and 18th, respectively. Eager turned in a time of 27:47 with Thomas one second back.
Baylor will return to action Oct. 14 at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
