Baylor's head football coach spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from his comments.
Head Football Coach Kevin Steele:
"Looking back on the game Saturday, I thought our guys fought hard. They really had their jaws set. I think what caught up with us was the inability to make first downs. We were punting the ball from the original spot of possession almost the entire game and it hurt us. Our kicking game has improved though, and our defense has been stingy at times, but field position hurt us at Texas."
"In terms of our two young quarterbacks, I still think they've got good ability, arms and knowledge of the game. They've just been thrown in to Big 12 conference play and their supporting cast has been fluctuating, so it's been tough. As for who will start this week, we're not going to concern them with who is going to take the first snap. In the last few weeks, the guy coming off the bench has been more productive and I think that's because there has been less pressure."
"Internally, the attitude of this team has been great. If you were at practice yesterday, you could see it. These guys know where we're headed and they can't wait to get there. They are pretty impatient, but they see what's in the near future."
"This week, we have a monumental task before us. Playing against the No. 1 team in the country for the second time in 15 days is exciting, fun and challenging. I really hope the people of Waco and Central Texas will take the opportunity to come and see the country's No. 1 team on Saturday."
"The Oklahoma defense is very stingy. They make you earn everything you get and they don't make major mistakes. Offensively, their receivers make plays and they generate a running game. As for Josh Heupel, he has done what they hoped he'd do when they signed him out of junior college - much like we hoped to get from Greg Cicero."
"Heupel has completed 70 percent of his passes and the guy is pretty accurate. He makes big plays. You can tell he's a tremendous student of the game."
On motivating the Baylor players:
"It's not hard to get them motivated. They are all already winners - we've just got to get them winning on the field. They are excited about the challenge."
