Shelby Anema (formerly Livingstone) serves Baylor Athletics as an Assistant Coach for the Volleyball program, returning to the team in 2024 where she was a volunteer assistant for three seasons, 2019-21.
In 2024, Livingstone helped steer the squad to a season with 23 wins, including 14 in conference for a third-place Big 12 finish. BU went to its school record ninth-consecutive NCAA Tournament, hosting the first and second rounds for the fifth time in eight years. The Bears were the regional fourth seed and the No. 15 seed overall headed into the tournament. The green and gold saw multiple NCAA Tournament records be broken for the program including kills, attack percentage, service aces and digs in a five-set match. Livingstone and company helped coach senior Elise McGhee to an Honorable Mention AVCA All-America finish as well as being unanimously named First Team All-Big 12, while Jackie Barrett Frazier, Lauren Briseño and Allie Sczech were named to the second team. Briseño entered the Baylor record books for her 89 career service aces and 1,412 digs. McGhee entered the record book for her 30-kill match against TCU (10/25), while Barrett Frazier also saw her name etched in history for the first triple-double by a BU player since 2009, posting 10 kills, 16 digs and 23 assists against Iowa State (10/30). McGhee capped off her senior season being the first Bear to be drafted to the Pro Volleyball Federation, called as the 34th overall pick, second in the fifth round of the PVF draft by the San Diego Mojo. The Bears were featured in all AVCA Coaches' Polls, finishing the season in 20th and 20th in RPI.
Livingstone spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at Liberty University as an assistant coach under Trevor Johnson, a former Baylor assistant coach (2015) who played for McGuyre at Cal Baptist.
During her first season on staff, Liberty posted a 23-9 record, winning its first ASUN regular-season title by going 14-2 in conference play. Liberty reached a program-record-best 70 in the final RPI before the postseason. The Lady Flames made their first appearance in a conference final since 2012 and were selected to host the first and second rounds of the NIVC. Liberty tied a program record with 14 conference wins and took a 12-match winning streak into the ASUN final. The Lady Flames snapped FGCU’s 21-match home winning streak. The Lady flames entered the postseason as the only NCAA Division I volleyball team with four players who tallied 300 or more kills. The 2023 season saw a 15-14 record for the Lady Flames, including an 8-8 record in their first season in Conference USA, making it to the league tournament as well. The team boasted one of the top 52 GPAs in the nation and had four named to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
In her time with the Bears as Volunteer Assistant Coach, she saw BU record three-straight 20-win seasons, a combined 71-15 record, a Big 12 regular season title and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a National Semifinal berth. Livingstone was pivotal in the faith and family aspect of the Baylor volleyball program, continually mentoring the players in their spiritual and athletic growth.
In 2021, Livingstone assisted BU to their sixth-straight season with at least 20 wins, and saw the Bears reach their fourth NCAA Regional Semifinals in program history. Baylor finished the season second in the Big 12 and had a final record of 22-6 and 14-2 in conference play. Livingstone aided the training of All-Americans Yossiana Pressley and Avery Skinner, along with Big 12 Setter of the Year Hannah (Lockin) Sedwick.
In 2020, Livingstone helped the Bears to their fifth-straight season of at least 20 wins and reach the NCAA Regional Semifinals for the third time in program history.
In 2019, Livingstone aided the Bears to their best season in program history, which included a share of the 2019 Big 12 regular season title and a NCAA National Semifinal berth. Baylor earned the No. 1 national seed with three First Team All-Americans in Yossiana Pressley, Shelly Stafford and Hannah Lockin.
While playing at Rice, she was a five-year letterwinner (2014-18). During her senior year, she recorded 205 kills and 367 digs, helping the Owls earn Conference USA regular season and tournament titles while punching their ticket to the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. Academically, she was named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and earned Rice’s C-USA Spirit of Service Winter Award and Scholar-Athlete Volleyball Award during her collegiate career. She totaled over 400 kills and 900 digs as an outside hitter with the Owls.
She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and cognitive science in December 2018 from Rice. She graduated with her Master of Divinity with a concentration in Sports Ministry at Baylor’s Truett Seminary in May of 2022. Livingstone was a mainstay in Baylor’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where she organized and led student meetings and aided the leaders of the organization. She was also the graduate assistant of the Faith and Sports Institute at Baylor in 2022.
Anema, formerly Livingstone, is the daughter of Baylor President Dr. Linda Livingstone and First Gent Brad Livingstone. Shelby married Kyle Anema in May of 2025.
